For Dal:
  • ¼ cup toor dal pigeon peas
  • ¼ cup moong dal yellow lentils
  • ¼ cup chana dal Bengal gram
  • ¼ cup urad dal black gram split
  • ¼ cup masoor dal red lentils
  • 1 onion chopped
  • 2 tomatoes chopped
  • 1 tsp ginger-garlic paste
  • 2 –3 green chilies slit
  • ½ tsp turmeric powder
  • 1 tsp red chili powder
  • 1 tsp coriander powder
  • Salt to taste
For Tempering:
  • 2 tbsp ghee
  • 1 tsp cumin seeds
  • 2 dried red chilies
  • Pinch of asafoetida hing

Method
 

Instructions
  1. Wash and soak all dals for 30 minutes.
  2. Pressure cook dals with turmeric, salt, and water until soft.
  3. Heat ghee, add cumin, red chilies, and hing.
  4. Add onion, ginger-garlic paste, and sauté.
  5. Add tomatoes and spices, cook until soft.
  6. Add cooked dal and simmer 10 minutes.

Notes

  • Serve with baati or steamed rice.
  • Garnish with fresh coriander and a spoonful of ghee.
